Picture of Buddhist glory

Patan is probably one of the oldest Buddhist cities in the world . It is belived that it was founded third century AD. Patan is situated on a plateau across Bagmati River . Another nameof patan is lalitpur. this city is known for its fine traditional craft and rich artistic heritage.

Patan is disigned and built after the Buddhist Dharma Chakra. It is surrounded by four stupas at four corners of Patan, one at each corner as its cardinal point. Tha stupas are said to have been built by Emperor Ashoka in the third century BC. It is also said that the ancient city got its name Lalitpatan after the Lalitdhara forest was cleared by king Biradava. Patan was the name used by Newars in Yala. It is sait that King Yalamber named this city after himself. Before the malla dynasty come to power in 1480,the Muslim Emperor Shamshuddin Iliya destroyed the temples and monumenets of Patan . When King Siddhi Nar Shign Malla ascended the throne in 1618,he started to rebuilt the city and Shrinivas Malla and Yog Narendra Malla made further Contributions to it. The Krishna temple is dedicated to lord Krishna was build by Siddhi Nar Sigha Mallain 1637.
